Eloqua — folder rules (hierarchical)

Short Description When pushing Hive9 tactics into Eloqua, you configure destination folders at the Plan level. Eloqua supports hierarchical folders — this article covers the rules.

What this article answers

  • Why folder configuration matters for Eloqua.
  • The hierarchical folder syntax.
  • How to set folders at the Plan level.

Why folders matter

When Hive9 pushes a tactic into Eloqua as a campaign, the campaign needs a destination folder in Eloqua. Without one, the push fails or lands in the wrong place.

Folders also affect downstream operations in Eloqua:

  • Folder structure determines how marketing operations users find and manage campaigns.
  • Folder-based permissions in Eloqua determine who can edit which campaigns.
  • Reporting in Eloqua often slices by folder.

Get the folder structure right at setup; it's painful to rearrange after many campaigns exist.

Hierarchical folder syntax

Eloqua supports nested folders. You specify the path with slashes:

North America/Pending
EMEA/Production
Latin America/Drafts/Q3

Each / represents a level of nesting. The folders must exist in Eloqua before pushes target them — Hive9 won't create folders automatically.

Where to set folders

Eloqua folder configuration lives at the Plan level, not at the Tactic level. The reasoning: most organizations want all tactics in a Plan to land in the same folder (or hierarchy).

To set:

  1. Open the Plan's Inspection Window.
  2. Find the Eloqua folder field (visible only if Eloqua integration is enabled).
  3. Enter the full path using / separators.
  4. Save.

All Tactics under this Plan that push to Eloqua will land in (or under) the specified folder.

Folder strategies

Strategy 1 — One folder per Plan

Simple: each Plan has its own Eloqua folder. Easy to manage, but creates many top-level folders in Eloqua over time.

Strategy 2 — Region + status hierarchy

Folders like North America/Pending, North America/Production, EMEA/Pending. Tactics push into the right regional folder, with sub-folders for status.

Strategy 3 — Year + quarter + region

Folders like FY26/Q3/North America. Good for fiscal-period reporting in Eloqua.

Pick the strategy that matches how your Eloqua team works. Coordinate with them — they're the ones who'll live with the folder structure.

Common pitfalls

Folder doesn't exist in Eloqua. Hive9's push fails if the destination folder hasn't been created in Eloqua first. Create the folders in Eloqua before configuring them on Plans.

Folder path typos. A typo in the folder path means tactics push into the wrong location (or fail to push). Double-check paths during initial setup.

Folder reorganization. If you rearrange folders in Eloqua after Hive9 has pushed tactics, the existing tactics' folder references in Hive9 become stale. Update the Plan-level configuration to match.

Slash vs backslash. Use forward slash /. Backslash \ is not the separator.

Common questions

Can I change a Plan's Eloqua folder after tactics have been pushed? You can change it for future pushes. Tactics already in Eloqua stay in their existing folder unless re-pushed. Re-pushing requires admin intervention — coordinate with your CSM.

Can two Plans share the same Eloqua folder? Yes — multiple Plans can target the same folder. Eloqua differentiates campaigns by their individual names, not by folder uniqueness.

Does Hive9 support all Eloqua folder types? Hive9 targets standard campaign folders. Specialized folder types in Eloqua may not be supported — check with your CSM.

Why don't I see the Eloqua folder field on my Plan? The field appears only if Eloqua integration is enabled for your instance. Check Settings → Integrations.
