Deleting records via the Allocadia API — what to know first

DELETE on Allocadia API resources can't be reversed through the API itself. Read this before you run bulk deletes.

DELETE is final from the API's perspective

The Allocadia REST API supports DELETE on line items and several other resources. Once issued, DELETE cannot be reversed through the same channel — there is no restore or undelete endpoint on the public API.

Deleted line items do go to the UI Recycle Bin and can be restored from there. See I deleted line items through the Allocadia API — can I recover them? for the full recovery workflow.

Don't use POST as a "redo"

A common misconception: if DELETE removed something, re-POST should restore it. It doesn't. POST creates a new line item with a new ID. The new item won't be referenced by:

  • Existing PRs that pointed at the original Line Item ID.
  • BI Export rows keyed on the original ID.
  • Reports or dashboards that filter by the original ID.
  • Downstream integrations that cached the ID.

The result is a look-alike, not the original back.

Best practices before running bulk deletes

  • Capture IDs you're about to delete. Store them so you have a reference for restoration if needed.
  • Dry-run first. Query the records you're planning to delete and confirm the count matches your expectation before issuing DELETE.
  • Confirm with the data owner. Bulk deletes should rarely be unilateral.
  • Pace the deletes. The 100-calls-per-minute rate limit applies — a large delete batch will hit it. Add deliberate spacing.
  • Keep audit records. Log every DELETE your integration issues, with timestamp and ID.

If you deleted by mistake

Immediately:

  1. Pause the integration that performed the deletes — if the logic that triggered them runs again, your restore will be undone.
  2. Open the UI Recycle Bin in the affected Sub-Category and restore items one at a time.
  3. If items aren't in the Recycle Bin or restore fails, contact Support with the time window, hierarchy, and sample IDs.
