How time periods and allocation work in Allocadia line items

A Line Item's planned amount is distributed across a time period. Here's how that distribution works and how to change it.

The concept

A Line Item has a planned total amount and a time period over which that amount is spent. Allocadia breaks the total into per-period buckets (typically monthly or quarterly) so you can see your spend plan laid out across the fiscal year.

Even distribution vs custom distribution

By default, new Line Items distribute the total evenly across the time period. A $12,000 line item over 12 months becomes $1,000 per month.

To override the distribution, open the Line Item's time-period cells in the grid and enter specific values for each month or quarter. The per-period total must sum to the planned total β€” if you change a per-period value, the planned total updates to match, and vice versa.

Monthly vs quarterly grid

Your budget grid is usually configured to show either monthly or quarterly columns. The underlying data stays the same regardless of which granularity you view at β€” monthly values roll up into quarters, quarters into the full-period total.

If your account is configured for monthly budgeting but you want to see quarters, use the view toggle in the budget grid header.

Changing the time period

Most line items share the fiscal-year period of their parent hierarchy. If you need a line item that spans a different period (e.g. a multi-year initiative), see Multi-year line items and the carry-over feature in Allocadia.
