Build custom reports from the GoodData data table. MAQL is the underlying query language. Here's a starting point.
When to build a custom report
Standard reports cover the common patterns. Build a custom report when:
- You need to slice by a custom attribute unique to your account (e.g. a vendor tier, a campaign code).
- You need to combine data in a way the standard set doesn't (e.g. PO vs forecast overlay for a specific tactic).
- You need an ad-hoc one-off view for a stakeholder.
Creating a custom report
- Open Insights → New Report (or Create Report, depending on your version).
- Pick attributes (the dimensions you want to group by — FY, Category, Vendor, etc.) and metrics (the measures — planned amount, mapped actuals, PO pipeline).
- Drag them into the report canvas.
- Add filters as needed.
- Save with a clear name — report titles are typed into search by future users.
MAQL basics
MAQL (Multi-dimensional Analytical Query Language) is the query language under custom metrics. A simple MAQL metric for mapped actuals:
SELECT SUM(Actual Amount) WHERE Status (Mapped or Unmapped) = Mapped
Common patterns:
-
BYto group:SELECT SUM(Actual Amount) BY Category -
WHEREto filter:WHERE FY = This - Nested metrics: build a metric from another metric to layer calculations.
The data table UI lets you build most reports without typing MAQL. You'll only need MAQL directly for custom metrics or more complex formulas.
