Short Description No — each user has exactly one role. This article explains how to compose the permissions you need by editing the role or using teams.
What this article answers
- The one-role-per-user rule.
- How to combine role permissions and team permissions to get the access you need.
- When to create a custom role.
The short answer
No. In Hive9, each user is assigned exactly one role. You can't stack roles.
Why one role per user
Roles in Hive9 are designed as composable permission sets. If a user needs additional capabilities, the right approach is to:
- Edit the existing role to grant the missing permissions (affects every user with that role), or
- Assign a different role that already includes what they need, or
- Create a new custom role with the exact combination of permissions and assign it to that user.
This keeps the permission model auditable — every user's capabilities flow from exactly one role definition.
How to change a user's role
- Go to Settings → Users.
- Click the user's name to open their profile.
- Open the Role dropdown and select the new role.
- Save.

The role change takes effect immediately. The user may need to refresh their browser to see new menu items become available.
How to create a new role
- Go to Settings → Roles.
- Click New Role.
- Name the role and configure permissions on the Plan, Measure, and Notification tabs.
- Save.
Existing users keep their current role until you reassign them. Edits to a role definition apply to every user holding that role.
Combining roles with teams
If you find yourself wanting "user X needs the permissions of two different roles," consider whether the difference is really about team scope rather than role.
- Role controls what features a user can access (which menus, which actions).
- Team controls which content a user can see and act on.
A user on multiple teams sees and edits content across those teams, while still having one role. That's often the actual need behind a multi-role request.
