Short Description The Honeycomb (Workspace Control Panel) on the Plan Grid lets you apply changes to many tactics at once. This article walks through the workflow safely.
What this article answers
- What the Honeycomb is and where to find it.
- The step-by-step bulk action workflow.
- Safety practices to avoid unintended changes.
What the Honeycomb is
The Honeycomb (formally the Workspace Control Panel) is a control on the Plan Grid that exposes bulk operations. The icon usually looks like a hexagonal grid pattern in the toolbar.
When you open the Honeycomb, you see the available actions for the currently filtered set of rows.
Available bulk actions
The exact set depends on your role and instance configuration, but commonly:
- Update a custom attribute across many tactics.
- Shift dates by a uniform amount.
- Change owner.
- Submit multiple tactics for approval.
- Apply a Template.
- Export selected rows.
The bulk action workflow
Step 1 — Filter your selection precisely
Bulk actions apply to every visible row on the Plan Grid. Get your filter right before opening the Honeycomb.
- Use the Filter Panel to narrow to the exact tactics you want.
- Check the row count at the bottom or top of the grid — does it match your expectation?
- Spot-check a few rows to confirm they're the right targets.
Step 2 — Open the Honeycomb
- Click the Honeycomb icon.
- The panel shows the available bulk actions.
- Click the action you want.
Step 3 — Configure the change
A dialog appears asking for the change parameters:
- For attribute updates: pick the attribute and the new value.
- For date shifts: enter the offset (e.g., +30 days).
- For owner changes: pick the new owner.
- For submit/approve actions: confirm the action.
Step 4 — Review affected count
The dialog confirms how many rows will be changed. Pause here. If the count is much higher than you expected, your filter is wider than you thought — cancel and refine the filter.
Step 5 — Apply
Click Apply (or equivalent).
For large selections (hundreds of rows), the operation runs in the background and may take a minute or more. Don't navigate away until you see confirmation.
Step 6 — Verify
After the action completes:
- Refresh the Plan Grid.
- Spot-check several rows to confirm the change applied as expected.
- Open Audit Logs (Plan Log) to see the per-record change records.
Safety practices
- Snapshot first for significant changes. Take a Snapshot of the Plan or Finance Budget before applying bulk changes. See How do I use Templates and Snapshots?
- Start with a small test. Run the action on 5–10 rows first to confirm it does what you expect. Then scale up.
- Watch for approval triggers. Bulk changes to workflow-driving attributes (cost, Tactic Type, custom attributes used as workflow criteria) can put many tactics into re-approval at once. Coordinate with approvers.
- Bulk changes can't be one-click-undone. You can reverse via another bulk action — but only if you know the prior values. The audit log records both old and new values per row, which helps with manual rollback.
Common questions
Can I bulk-edit Line Items? Some configurations expose Line Item bulk actions in the Honeycomb. Check what's available for your role.
Will bulk changes notify owners and approvers? Yes — bulk changes that put tactics into approval, or that affect owned objects, generate notifications according to your instance's notification rules.
What if a bulk action partially fails? You'll see a confirmation indicating which rows succeeded and which failed. Common reasons for partial failure: orphaned approval workflow on some rows, permission gaps, or value validation errors.
Can I save a bulk action for reuse? The action itself runs once. To repeat with the same filter and value, save the filter as a Saved View and apply the action manually each time.
