Calendar view vs Grid view — when to use each

Short Description The Plan Grid offers both a tabular Grid view and a timeline Calendar view. This article explains what each is good for and how to switch between them.

What this article answers

  • The strengths of each view.
  • How to switch between them.
  • View-specific features (Quick View popup, color coding).

Grid view

Grid view is the default tabular layout of the Plan Grid:

  • Rows are plan objects (Plans, Campaigns, Programs, Tactics, Line Items) in hierarchy order.
  • Columns are attributes (Name, Owner, Start Date, End Date, Planned Cost, Actual Cost, custom attributes, etc.).
  • Roll-up values appear on parent rows showing aggregated child totals.

Grid view is best when you need to:

  • Compare attribute values across many objects.
  • Edit attributes inline.
  • Sort by any column.
  • Run bulk actions across a filtered set.

Calendar view

Calendar view displays the same objects on a timeline:

  • Horizontal axis is time (days, weeks, months, quarters — zoomable).
  • Vertical axis groups objects by hierarchy.
  • Bars represent each object's date range.
  • Colors distinguish Tactic Types (set in Admin → Theme → Tactic Type Colors).

Calendar view is best when you need to:

  • See how tactics overlap in time.
  • Spot scheduling conflicts or gaps.
  • Communicate timing to non-Hive9 audiences (export to ICS for Google/Outlook).
  • Get a visual sense of your marketing rhythm.

Switching between views

The view toggle sits on the Plan Grid's top control bar.

  1. Click the Calendar icon to switch to Calendar view.
  2. Click the Grid icon to switch back.

Your filter selections (Filter Panel) carry across — the same set of objects appears in both views.

The Quick View popup (Calendar view only)

In Calendar view, clicking a tactic's bar opens a Quick View popup with key attributes:

  • Always shown: Name, Start Date, End Date, Planned Cost, Description.
  • Plus any additional custom attributes your admin has configured under Theme → Calendar Popup Custom Attributes.

The Quick View is meant for fast scanning. To see the full Inspection Window, click into the tactic.

Color coding (Calendar view)

Calendar view colors bars by Tactic Type. Your admin configures the colors in Theme → Tactic Type Colors. The number of available colors matches the number of Tactic Types in your Model.

If many tactic types share similar colors, ask your admin to differentiate them — it improves at-a-glance readability significantly.

Exporting Calendar view

If your instance has Calendar Export turned on, you can export a Saved View's Calendar as an ICS feed and subscribe to it in Google Calendar or Outlook. See How do I export a Hive9 calendar view to Google or Outlook?

Common questions

Can I edit attributes from Calendar view? You can drag bars to adjust dates (if your role permits). Other attribute edits require opening the Inspection Window.

Why don't I see all my tactics in Calendar view? The same filter applies in both views. Check the Filter Panel — a date filter or status filter may be excluding the tactics you expect.

Can I zoom out to see a whole year at once? Yes — Calendar view supports day, week, month, and quarter zoom levels. Use the zoom controls in the view's toolbar.
